cue the drum roll: THE WINNAHS ! ! ! [revised]

this has been a record-setting season, from the sheer number of participants--yet to be tabulated--might be mid-march--through the course records for both men [tj tollekson] and women [kelli mente], to the very many personal bests, and for so goll-darned many NEWBIES!
we thank ALL of you who traipsed out to elkhart every month to test your best against the others in central iowa. watch for some minor tweaking, for some major improvements, and some new classes for next year.
thanks also to dixie choppers [BIG cash] and HED [fabulous grand prize give-away] and to oakley rob [glasses giveaway] and to the various area bike shops who have helped either by donating merchandise and or who have hustled DOZENS of newbies and first-timers out to our little race series. without you folks--shops AND participants--this wouldn't be the big and growing event that it is.
and for chad and i, it has been a very enjoyable experience, and a learning one at that.
thanks to our many volunteers, including the turnaround robros [and momma robro for the cake and pizza], and to the many start and finish helpers, and to the fine folks at the elkhart tap [is it billy's? FANTASTIC cheeseburgers and fries and frosty fat tire on tap].
the awards will be made tonight at the final altoona criterium, during the "b" race. you MUST be present to be eligible for the oakley glasses giveaway, but need NOT be present to have your shot at your choice of either a HED jet, disc, or tt bars. yowzer!
an observation about the results: you not tell from the results, here, but several of the division winers were determined not necessarily by the fastest time, but by consistency. for example, paul black won BOTH the 50+ and 60+ because he raced more than anyone else. he showed up for ALL the races, and didn't slack off like i did in april. likewise in the category 4 women and the junior men: the winner came out month after month and participated. this consistency not only, with time, will make you faster, it will also make you a better racer. because the ONLY way you can become a better racer, at this level, is to RACE MORE.
[memo to self: RACE MORE!]
and, with that, here are the series winners:

pretty much FINAL race results #5

PLEASE NOTIFY ME OF ANY INCORRECT TIMES, AS WE WILL BE AWARDING SERIES PRIZES THIS THURSDAY AT THE ALTOONA CRITERIUM.
.....
at long last, folks, the pretty much official results from the final race of the series.
first of all chad and all the all9yards.com team offer our HUGE thanks for your loyal support for making this year's series such an enormous success. we saw a new course record earlier this season, and we saw many, many personal bests month after month. but most significant of all, we FAR exceeded our wildest hopes for the turnout this year. for august, we had "only" 66 riders. in years past, this would have been big, but you folks have been outstanding in coming out in droves. i'll save the big kudos for the series results post, but i would be remiss if i neglected to say thanks to ALL of you for taking part.
PLEASE PLAN TO RACE AGAIN NEXT YEAR,
AND PLAN TO BRING A FRIEND!
.....
unfortunately, a couple bugs remain in our timing system; hence the delay in this post. if you feel your time is in error, please contact me at once at eeastonwest@aol.com, and i will check our records and make the appropriate corrections. we have spent long long hours pouring over our notes, and have done our best to make many corrections, but we might have missed some, so don't hestitate to point them out. i would note that a couple riders told me we had them TOO FAST. let's keep this as fair as we can, so if your time is NOT right, either way, let me know.
.....
to the evening's racing: august saw a strong south wind and clear skies eventually die down, but that didn't keep some of the regulars from posting their usual fast times. in the open class, derek cassaday continued his strangle-hold on the open men's class, while ryan french, fresh from his big win at grinnell, staked a strong 3d place.

tentative official results: race #4

taking elkhart by storm!
all knowledgeable racers know this: when you see you have an opening, you want to be able to take advantage of it. that's what we did last night at the latest edition of the 2009 all9yards elkhart time trial series presented by dixie choppers. the weather has been turbulent lately in central iowa, and nexrad wasn't looking too good for us, except for that little opening just around 500 pm. as chad and i drove up the road to elkhart, having placed the signs and cones at robro bend, we wondered if ANYone would come out. chad thought maybe 20 to 25. as we crested the little climb a few miles south, i saw vehicles--several of them. as we pulled into the elkhart sports complex parking facility, there were more than 25 cars parked and several riders were rolling around, getting warmed up. hoping for a repeat of last month's birthday cake and pizza, 75 brave souls and their support personnel showed up to test their mettle on the very clean out and back course, still smoldering after tj tollekson's scorching record ride in june.
like a precision swiss timing team, the first rider rolled at 630 pm, and some 80 starts later, the inevitable questions began: "do you have my time?"
the answer is: "yes."
no course record, but kelli mente did set a new women's standard--16:51.43, besting the old mark of lisa vetterlein.
as always, if you notice any questionable results, let me know, and we will investigate and try to determine the actual time.
i'd like to point out the growing number of junior racers, some of them quite young. it is quite encouraging to see this trend. kudos to the kids AND their parents.
as always, thanks for coming out, we'll see you at the races!

race #3 results

another night of fantastic turnout and IDEAL weather conditions, but would the course record set some years ago by reigning national espoirs road champion nick frey still prevail by evening's end? competitors and spectators alike would soon know.
pro triathlete t.j. tollakson blistered the 12 kilometre out-and-back with a 15:00:52, just shy of 48 km/h [30 mph], to snatch the $250 prize given by dixie choppers, the world's fastest lawn mower. notes from the evening:
1--happy birthday wishes to old man robro. soon we will need a rocking chair for those guys. and SPECIAL thanks to mama robro for the pizza and cake.
2--some of the locals are especially sensitive about our presence. please make an effort NOT to give them any reason to be unduly concerned. we do have all the permits and premissions required, and with the good graces and blessings of the local authorities, let's show some cycling class.
3--billy's bar and grill is quite the place for post-race refreshments and socializing. they have killer cheeseburgers and fries and fat tire on tap. stick around and chat while the results are tabulated, and be among the first to learn how you did.
4--we have just about all the bugs worked out of our software, and each month gets better and more efficient. july promises to be a snap, i've been telling people.
5--on that subject, next month, it will NOT take four days to get the results posted.
6--PLEASE NOTE:
a--riders depart every 30 seconds, NOT every minute. it is each rider's responsibility to KNOW his or her start time, and we will continue to take an increasingly dim view on missed starts.
b--this is a local time trial series, not the world championships. we keep the costs down to give more riders the chance to see how their fitness is coming along, and to get an honest assessment of how they match up with other folks with whom they ride, train, and race. we DO have a few rules, backed by usa cycling, and they include a clear set of guideline on drafting and taking pace from other racers. for the first time, we had a blatant violation of these rules.
that ain't cool, folks.
7--i am in the process of posting, in archival fashion, all the results from years gone by, so we can all mark our progress, and the progress of others, over the years. thanks to ross for the data. i'll put the links here when i get that done.
8--if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact either chad [chadbike11970@yahoo.com] or me [eeastonwest@aol.com] or just leave it in the comments section below.
9--next race is july 9. see you then!

Race #2 results

A great turnout for the second race of the year. Thanks to everyone for coming. Sorry we had to change the time between riders at the last second but I didn't want anyone on the bike after dark. We did have a few miss there start time but I think we got it all worked out. No one was penalized for being late since we made the change so late. Again if you don't see your name or it's in the wrong cat e-mail me at chadbike1970@yahoo.com.
